Original Works

Creative - MUSIC COMPOSITIONS

Events 300 – 303

The following guidelines and reminders are specific to this Division. Please also read the Information for Entrants & Rules and General Conditions.

1. THESE ARE NON-PERFORMANCE EVENTS. Works are submitted for adjudication and results are announced at a special public session where composers meet to hear selected works and receive awards.
2. A person may only enter ONCE in the SAME event.
3. Different works required for each event entered. Work submitted in previous years is not acceptable.
4. Unless an event is ‘Any Age’, entrants must conform to event age limits.
5. By submitting an entry, the entrant certifies that the work is original and the entrant holds all the rights.
6. Except in Event 300, works must be created by the entrant alone and not in collaboration.
7. Entrants may enter the same original work in one appropriate performance event elsewhere in this Syllabus.
8. Copyright in all works remains with the composers. Sydney Eisteddfod reserves the right, without remuneration to, but in consultation with the composer, to promote, feature, broadcast or publish winning works.
9. Entry Forms must be lodged by the closing date, March 13, 2012. An entry acknowledgement receipt will be sent via email.
10. Music Scores, lyrics and CDs must be submitted by July 2. Entry fees are not refunded if works are not submitted. We do not acknowledge receipt of works but entrants should call/email the Sydney Eisteddfod for acknowledgement of receipt of composition. No responsibility is accepted for works not adjudicated due to non-receipt.
11. Do not submit the original copy as works are not returned.
12. Composition scores MUST be accompanied with a CD- separate CD for each event. If the CD is prepared on a computer, ensure it plays through a normal audio system. The Event Number and Entrant Number must be clearly written on the CD and visible through its protective case. Do NOT use labels as this may cause CD failure. Composition submissions must consist of a fully notated manuscript score. No score shorthand (e.g. lyrics with chord symbols only) can be accepted. The following must be clearly written on the cover sheet:* Entrant No. (obtained from an advice - see note below); *Event No; *Title of Work; *Signed authentication  ‘I declare that this is my own original work and was composed in… (year). My true age is…’.(A parent must verify for a person under 18 yrs). Age is not necessary in ‘Any Age’ events. A recording reinforces the entry by giving the adjudicator the opportunity to compare the written work with an example of the practical intention. The quality of the recording is not a criterion.
13. A sufficient standard is required to reflect a reasonable musical understanding in the areas of form and structure, including orchestration/arrangements and the development of thematic and harmonic directions.

Note: A pink 'Appearance Advice' (mailed in May) will notify entrants of their Entrant Number and the final date of the Workshop/Awards Session. Attendance at this session is not compulsory and the public is welcome (admission charges apply). If unable to attend, adjudicator’s report can be collected from Sydney Eisteddfod office after the session or by providing a stamped self-addressed envelope.
