241: NSW Doctors Orchestra INSTRUMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP (16-25 Years)

The Winner will also be invited to attend rehearsals in the Australian Chamber Orchestra Studio and, depending on the repertoire of the instrument of the winner, be invited to play in ACO education events.

The Winner also receives a photographic portfolio to the value of $100 of performance photos taken during the Festival courtesy of WinkiPoP Media.

The aim of this Scholarship is to discover and encourage an outstanding instrumentalist in the fields of strings (bowed and plucked), woodwind or brass instruments.
Matana Foundation For Young People, through the kind sponsorship of Mr. Lorand Loblay, will offer one Scholarship of $2,500 to a Finalist 16-20 years who is financially disadvantaged. All entrants, 16-20 years ONLY, are requested to send in, with their biographical details, a submission as to why they should be considered for this Scholarship. The adjudicators will also decide this Scholarship and announce it at the Finals.
CONDITIONS:
1. Event is open to any instrumentalist who has lived in Australia or New Zealand for at least five years or is a citizen or permanent resident of either country. Previous winners not eligible.
2. Entrants must be aged from 16 to 25 years (inclusive) as at December 31, 2012. AT THE HEATS ALL ENTRANTS will be required to produce proof of age and their residency before they are allowed to compete (e.g. birth certificate or a passport. A driver's licence is not acceptable).
3. Test: Works must be prepared & performed from memory for one instrument only:
* Preliminary Heat: One item. Total Performance Time of up to 10 minutes.
* Semi-Final if required: Two contrasting works performed consecutively. Total Performance Time of up to 15 minutes. (Note: This may include the heat item.)
* Final: A concert program of major works (including the heat & semi-final items) with a performance time of between 15 and 20 minutes. Choice of repertoire will be taken into consideration by the adjudicators. Note: See Item No 5 below. Finalists will be interviewed by the adjudicators.
Adjudicators’ assessments will be written for the preliminary heats only. No marks will be given on these assessments.
4. ACCOMPANIMENT: Performances are solo with acoustic piano accompaniment, unless the work chosen was composed specifically for solo instrument without accompaniment.
5. Entrants MUST EMAIL (info@sydneyeisteddfod.com.au) with their entry form, OR BEFORE JUNE 8, the following details for ALL THE ROUNDS, e.g. Heat, Semi-Final & Final:
a) Title of all works PLUS name of accompanist for all rounds;
b) Names of the movements for ALL the chosen works;
c) Approximate time limit for each work;
d) A Stage Plan if a 20th or 21st Century work, which includes electronics, is selected;
e) Outline of proposed course of study AND;
f) A 200-word biography in paragraph format (as a word document) and a suitable photo (jpeg) for publicity.
g) Submit application for ‘financial disadvantaged Scholarship’ if eligible (see above).
The adjudicators will be given this information at the heats and entrants will be informed if a certain work is not considered suitable for the Final.
6. A selected number of Semi-finalists will be announced at the conclusion of all divisions of the heats. SIX FINALISTS AND TWO RESERVE FINALISTS will be selected after the Semi-Final. In awarding the Scholarship the adjudicators will take into consideration presentation, current level of achievement and potential.
7. The Scholarship will be awarded with $2,000 upon winning and the balance of $6,000 in two equal instalments after six and twelve months respectively, subject to the receipt of progress reports from the winner's teacher or teaching institution.
8. The Scholarship must be taken within two years of winning and completed within two years thereafter or be forfeited.
9. The Winner and Finalists must be reasonably available for media interviews and to perform without fee in future Showcase performances nominated by and in the interest of Sydney Eisteddfod.
