Non-Amplified Events 1 - 47

The following guidelines and reminders are specific to this Division.Please also read the Information for Entrants & Rules and General Conditions.

 

1. Performances are for soloists unless an event indicates otherwise.
2. A person may only perform ONCE in the SAME event.
3. A different item is required for each event unless repeat performances are specifically allowed. If it is specifically indicated that an item may be repeated, it may be repeated ONLY ONCE (except when progressing to finals).
4. Time limits normally provide for the presentation of ONE ITEM unless event requirements stipulate otherwise. They are strictly monitored and entrants exceeding the time limit will be eligible for 'comments only' - not for any placing.
5. Registration and performance rules are strictly enforced (see Nos 15 & 16 in the Rules & General Conditions of Entry).
6. Unless an event is ‘Any Age’, entrants must conform to event age limits. Random age checks will be made and entrants must carry a photocopy of their birth certificate or school ID with their date of birth.
7. Entrants perform at their own risk. Entrants agree they are of good health and fitness and physically able to participate in an event. No liability will be accepted for any injury sustained whilst carrying out that performance.
8. In case of insufficient entries in any event they may be combined with similar events.
9. These events are for voice with acoustic piano accompaniment unless otherwise specified. No microphones or recorded backing allowed.
10. All items must be sung in the original language as set by the composer, unless specified otherwise.
11. A copy of the music must be provided for the adjudicator. Music must be provided with the name of the item and the composer clearly marked. Photocopies will not be returned.
12. A separate entry form stating the name of BOTH entrants must be completed for duos and a GROUP NAME must be given for THREE or more in an event.

 

ACCOMPANISTS:

NO OFFICIAL ACCOMPANISTS provided for events ‘Any Age’ and Events 11; 20S & 39. Official Accompanists will be appointed for Events 21-29, 31-38 & 40-47 ONLY. Details available in May 2012.

An Official Accompanist is free at the event, but a prior rehearsal is advisable and singers should make an appointment as soon as possible when details are known after final timetabling, but at least three weeks before the performance date. Accompanists are not obliged to play poorly presented, difficult or illegible music at sight. Our recommended rehearsal fee is $40 (incl. gst) per half-hour.



1: McDonald’s Operatic Aria (35 & Under)

Total Prize Value Exceeds $57,000

This event, originally known as The Sun Aria, was established with the first City of Sydney Eisteddfod in 1933 to discover fine voices from throughout Australia and New Zealand. Following closure of The (Sydney) Sun newspaper in 1988, McDonald’s Australia generously expanded their support of Sydney Eisteddfod by maintaining this important opportunity for opera singers.

Winner: Total Prize exceeds $43,000

* $5,000 cash plus a $35,000 Scholarship and a return economy airfare (up to the value of $3,000) to undertake overseas study for the operatic stage, including vocal tuition/coaching, languages and stagecraft.

* Opportunity to attend rehearsals at Opera Australia in Melbourne or Sydney and observe an opera throughout the stages of its production.

* The Winner also receives a photographic portfolio to the value of $100 of performance photos taken during the Festival courtesy of WinkiPoP Media.

2nd Prize: $5,000.

Finalists: $1,000 each.

Eight Semi-Finalists (not selected for the Final): $500 each




The Italian Opera Foundation Australia (IOFA) has once again joined with Sydney Eisteddfod to offer a Scholarship with a flexible study program of up to six months of study in Italy with a total prize value of up to a maximum of A$50,000 for the winner of the IOFA Scholarship.

Winner: Total Prize Value of up to a maximum of A$50,000 of a flexible study program of up to six months study in Italy.Sponsored by Italian Opera Foundation Australia (IOFA).

All entrants from Event 1: McDonald’s Operatic Aria will be considered for the IOFA Scholarship. The finalists will be selected by the adjudicators of the McDonald’s Operatic Aria.

The entrant must have lived in Australia for at least five years or be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia. Age limit for entrants is 35 years as at December 31, 2012. Previous winners are not eligible.

6 Finalists will be announced after the Semi-Final of the McDonald’s Operatic Aria on June 24. All selected IOFA Finalists must have prepared an additional aria by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (should Verdi not be one of their chosen composers in their selection of four arias for the McDonald’s Operatic Aria). This Verdi aria, together with the aria by an Italian composer, will be the two arias, which the Finalists will sing in the IOFA’s Final (Friday July 6, 6pm Sydney Conservatorium of Music). All Finalists will be given more information upon selection.

The selected IOFA Finalists must also agree to complete a recommended period of an Italian language course, which forms part of the IOFA Scholarship prior to departure to Italy should they be the Winner.

 The Scholarship will be taken up in Italy for a flexible study program of up to 6 months within the next two years (2012/13) with the IOFA being involved in setting up the appropriate program with suitable Maestri in Italy.

 Finalists will be required to bring their own private accompanists. 

ACCOMPANIST: No Official Accompanist provided for the Heats, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Final or Final.

Finalists will be required to bring their private accompanists for ALL THE ROUNDS, including the Finals.

Sydney Eisteddfod is grateful to Sydney Church of England Grammar School for generously providing the Smith Auditorium for the Heats, Quarter-Finals and Semi-Final of this competition.

They must also supply a 200-word biography in paragraph form, which can be emailed in advance to the Sydney Eisteddfod if preferred (info@sydneyeisteddfod.com.au).
3. Singers chosen for the Quarter-Finals will be announced at the end of each Preliminary Heat. Sixteen Semi-Finalists will be chosen from the Quarter-Finals. EIGHT FINALISTS AND TWO RESERVE FINALISTS will be selected for the Final.
4. Entrants must prepare four contrasting arias from four different operas from at least two musical periods and, in at least two languages (1): One aria from before Mozart’s death; (2): One aria from after Mozart’s death - 1791; and (3) One aria by an Italian composer. The fourth aria may be from any period, to be performed as follows:
    * Preliminary Heat: One aria of own choice - selected by the singers;
    * Quarter-Final: A different aria - selected by the adjudicators;
    * Semi-Final: Two remaining arias;
    * Final: Two arias from the four previously sung - selected by the adjudicators.

Title of all FOUR ARIAS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN WRITING (email preferred: info@sydneyeisteddfod.com.au) NO LATER THAN JUNE 4, or entry may be forfeited.
REPERTOIRE: Arias may be chosen from the entire range of the operatic literature as currently performed in major opera houses around the world, including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Verismo, Modern, Opera Comique and Operetta.

5. Entrants may contact Sydney Eisteddfod in writing (email preferred), no later than May 31 for confirmation of suitability.
6.  All of the arias may be repeated ONCE in other events.
7. Arias are to be no longer than ten (10) minutes each, including recitative (if any). Cuts may be made if necessary. Long instrumental preludes or interludes should be curtailed.
8. All arias must be sung in the original key and language set by the composer, performed from memory with piano accompaniment.
9. One copy only of each aria must be supplied for the adjudicators at the Heat, Quarter-Final and Semi-Final. Adjudicators’ assessments will be written for the preliminary heats only. No marks will be given on these assessments.
10. It is compulsory for Finalists to be present at the conclusion of the Semi-Final for interviews with the adjudicators, have photographs taken and be informed about the proceedings for the Final.
11. Finalists and their private accompanists must be available for a compulsory stage rehearsal on the day of the Final.
12. The awarding of the Scholarship is at the absolute discretion of the adjudicators, and is given on the understanding that the Winner will undertake overseas study for the operatic stage, including vocal tuition/coaching, languages and stagecraft.
13. The Winner is required to submit a detailed plan of study to Sydney Eisteddfod, after which payment of the Scholarship will be made progressively upon production of written reports from the teacher or institution. The Scholarship must be taken up within two years from the date of winning, and completed within one year thereafter or be forfeited.
14. The Winner and Finalists must be reasonably available for media interviews and to perform without fee in future Showcase performances nominated by and in the interest of Sydney Eisteddfod.

2S: Special Voice Awards (Any Age)

Entrants from Events 3-29 will be considered for these special awards.

3: Opera & Arts Support Group VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP (30 & Under)

Total Prize Value: $16,000

1st: Emiel Doeland Memorial Scholarship of $10,000.

2nd: Paul Worthington Encouragement Award of $3,000.

Remaining Four Finalists: $500 each.

To further encourage the highest standards in the performance of opera, Opera & Arts Support Group is proud to offer this Scholarship and Awards. No previous winner eligible.

Heat: Own choice of ONE operatic aria. Time limit up to 6 minutes. SIX FINALISTS AND TWO RESERVE Finalists will be chosen from the heats.

Final: Two operatic arias (including the aria from the heats) performed consecutively. Time limit up to 6 minutes each. The Scholarship Winner will be paid half upon winning with the balance in six months subject to application with evidence of studies completed, plus a detailed plan for future studies for consideration before the balance can be paid.



4S: Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Awards (Any Age)

Total Prize Value $3,000

Tentative Date: July 15

Singers must enter Event 5 (Male) or Event 6 (Female) Operatic Voice. Five finalists will be selected from events 5 & 6 below to sing in this combined final. Test: Two items performed consecutively. A repeat of the item sung in event 5 or 6 PLUS a second aria. Total Performance Time of up to 15 minutes. No report written for these Finals.

1st: $1,500 for the Werner Baer Memorial Award. Sponsored by the Sydney Savage Club.

2nd: $1,000for the Arete Zantiotis Award. Sponsored by the Sydney Savage Club.

3rd: $500. Sponsored by Miss Elizabeth Todd OAM & Miss Paula Clarkstone.



5: Male Operatic Voice (Any Age)

Test: Own choice of an aria from any opera, sung in original language and key. Time limit up to 8 minutes. No marks given on the adjudication reports.Five finalists will be selected to sing in Event 4S - Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Awards (see test for 4S above).



6: Female Operatic Voice (Any Age)

Tentative Date: July 10

Test: Own choice of an aria from any opera, sung in original language and key. Time limit up to 8 minutes. No marks given on the adjudication reports.Five finalists will be selected to sing in Event 4S - Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Awards (see test for 4S above).



7: English Opera & Art Song (Any Age)

Tentative Dates: July 16 & 17

For the Ronald Douglas Parnell Memorial Awards

Test: Two items performed consecutively: (a) An Art Song AND (b) One aria from an opera composed in the English language, sung in English (e.g. Balfe, Bishop, Arne, Purcell, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Handel, Bernstein, Copeland, Benjamin Britten, etc). Total Performance Time of up to 10 minutes. Singers will be assessed on normal vocal criteria with special emphasis on quality of choice, intonation and diction.

1st: $1,000.

2nd: $500.

3rd: $300.

8: Oratorio or Bach Aria (Any Age)

To be judged on (a) an intelligent understanding of character and context, (b) clear enunciation of text AND (c) a musical and theatrical performance.

NO OFFICIAL ACCOMPANIST PROVIDED To encourage the serious study of singing, Sydney Eisteddfod has generously provided this opportunity for voices from 21 to 25 years. To be eligible, singers must enter and perform in the Operatic Aria (Event 21) and at least two other events from 22-29.

First, Second & Third place-getters from each event will automatically qualify to sing in a SEMI-FINAL from which EIGHT singers will be selected to sing in a deciding Final for this Scholarship. Previous winners not eligible.

The Winner will receive the prize for payment of tuition in singing and languages, payable in two equal amounts, with the first instalment upon winning, and the second instalment six months later, subject to proof of continued tuition.

Semi-Final: Test: Two items performed consecutively: (a) Operatic Aria from event 21 AND (b) A song that was sung in events 22-29. The program MUST include at least one prize-winning item.

Final: Test:Finalists repeat the two items from the Semi-Final.



21: Operatic Aria (21-25 Years)

Tentative Date: July 1

Entrants qualify for 20S - see conditions. Test: Own choice. Must be sung in published key. Time limit up to 6 minutes.

Entrants qualify for 20S - see conditions. Test: Own choice of a song from any French composer e.g. Bizet, Chausson, Duparc, Debussy, D'Indy, Fauré, Franck, Ravel, Hahn, Ibert. Time limit up to 4 minutes.  

1st: $500. The winner will also be offered a professional engagement in the 2012 season of ARTSONG NSW.

24: Lieder (21-25 Years)

For the John Germain Memorial Awards 

Entrants qualify for 20S - see conditions. Test: Two items of a contrasting nature, drawn from operatic aria, operetta, ballad, art song or lieder. Total Performance Time up to 8 minutes.

YOUTH VOCAL - 17 to 20 Years

Note:All items must be sung in the original language as set by the composer.

1. Performances are for soloists unless an event indicates otherwise.
2. A person may only perform ONCE in the SAME event.
3. A different item is required for each event unless repeat performances are specifically allowed. If it is specifically indicated that an item may be repeated, it may be repeated ONLY ONCE (except when progressing to finals).
4. Time limits normally provide for the presentation of ONE ITEM unless event requirements stipulate otherwise. They are strictly monitored and entrants exceeding the time limit will be eligible for 'comments only' - not for any placing.
5. Registration and performance rules are strictly enforced (see Nos 15 & 16 in the Rules & General Conditions of Entry).
6. Unless an event is ‘Any Age’, entrants must conform to event age limits. Random age checks will be made and entrants must carry a photocopy of their birth certificate or school ID with their date of birth.
7. Entrants perform at their own risk. Entrants agree they are of good health and fitness and physically able to participate in an event. No liability will be accepted for any injury sustained whilst carrying out that performance.
8. In case of insufficient entries in any event they may be combined with similar events.
9. These events are for voice with acoustic piano accompaniment unless otherwise specified. No microphones or recorded backing allowed.
10. All items must be sung in the original language as set by the composer, unless specified otherwise.
11. A copy of the music must be provided for the adjudicator. Music must be provided with the name of the item and the composer clearly marked. Photocopies will not be returned.

ACCOMPANISTS:

NO OFFICIAL ACCOMPANISTS provided for events ‘Any Age’ and Events 11; 20S; 30S & 39. Official Accompanists will be appointed for Events 21- 29; 31-38 & 40-47 ONLY. Details available in May 2012.

An Official Accompanist is free at the event, but a prior rehearsal is advisable and singers should make an appointment as soon as possible when details are known after final timetabling, but at least three weeks before the performance date. Accompanists are not obliged to play poorly presented, difficult or illegible music at sight. Our recommended rehearsal fee is $40 (incl. gst) per half-hour.



30S: Sydney Eisteddfod Joan Sutherland Memorial VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP (17-20 Years)

For the Norman Chaney Memorial Awards

Total Prize Value: $2,400

Winner: $1,000. Finalists: $200 each.

To be eligible, singers must enter and perform in at least three events from 31-38.

First, Second & Third place-getters from each event will automatically qualify to sing in a SEMI-FINAL from which EIGHT singers will be selected to sing in a deciding Final for this Scholarship. Previous winner not eligible.

The Winner will receive the prize for payment of tuition in singing and languages, payable in two equal amounts, with the first instalment upon winning, and the second instalment six months later, subject to proof of continued tuition.

Semi-Final: Test: Two items performed consecutively that were sung in events 31-38. The program MUST include at least one prize-winning item.

Final: Test: Finalists repeat the two items from the Semi-Final.



31: Operatic Aria (17-20 Years)

*Elsa Stralia was a popular prima donna of the 1920s/30s. Born in Adelaide in 1881, she studied in Melbourne, and went to London in 1910, where she was “discovered” by Sir Thomas Beecham. She went on to become an acclaimed prima donna at Covent Garden, Paris and La Scala.
